Andy Murray w czwartek na konferencji przed Australian Open 2019 zaskoczył tenisowy światowy smutną wiadomością. Trzykrotny triumfator rozgrywek wielkoszlemowych zamierza po Wimbledonie 2019 zakończyć swoją wybitną karierę:
„Nie czuję się dobrze. Walczyłem od jakiegoś czasu. Myślę, że istnieje możliwość, że Australian Open to mój ostatni turniej. Mogę grać z ograniczeniami. Ale znoszenie i ograniczeń i bólu nie pozwala mi cieszyć się rywalizacją i treningami.”
Szkot po przebytej kontuzji biodra nigdy nie powrócił do pełnej sprawności. W ubiegłym sezonie 31-latek rozegrał zaledwie 6 turniejów. Jego najlepszymi rezultatami były ćwierćfinały Shenzhen Open i Citi Open.
Były lider rankingu ATP podczas wywiadu nie potrafił ukryć łez. Wielu tenisistów nie może pogodzić się z decyzją Murraya. Wśród nich znaleźli się Stan Wawrinka, Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Roddick, Karen Khachanov, Kevin Anderson, Vasek Pospisil i Grigor Dimitrov.
